GENERAL CHEMISTRY 101
CALCULATIONS with CHEMICAL
FORMULAS and EQUATIONS
In this and subsequent sections, we shall use what we have learned about
chemical structure, electron configuration, and chemical formulas to study
the mass relationships of atoms and molecules. [..see
syllabus...]
(Its important that you complete the
"self-
.......exercises in each section!)
By international agreement, an atom of the carbon 12 isotope(
12C) has a mass
of exactly 12 atomic mass units(amu). Therefore, 1 amu is one-twelfth of the
mass of one carbon atom. The unit defined by the SI system is the
mole(mol),
which is the amount of substance that contains as many elementrary
entities as there are atoms in exactly 12 g of the carbon-12 isotope.
Experimentally the number is

In addition to the regular homework assignments of problems from the text,
self paced exercises, activities, quizzes, and virtual/practicals are
incorporated in each major section of this course. It is important, to
the extent possible, that each student take maximum advantage of these
study aids!
